The student imposter got me three times. Their passport says "Student" but they answer "I work at a coffee shop" when asked about their job. That's not an imposter because students have part-time jobs. I shot three innocent humans before learning this. Check the passport first, then interpret their answer.
Every Terminal 13 imposter has at least one tell. Some are obvious (extra arms), some are subtle (wrong birthday year). This guide covers every detection method so you never let the wrong one through.
Passport Verification
The core detection method. Compare what they say to what's on their passport.
Name Mismatch
Ask their name. If it doesn't match the passport, they're an imposter. This is the easiest tell because imposters sometimes forget what name they're using.
Example
- Passport says "John Smith"
- Answer is "I'm Michael Johnson"
- Verdict is Imposter
Job Mismatch
Ask about their job. Compare to passport.
Tricky case with Students
Students often answer with their part-time job instead of saying "student." If the passport says "Student" and they say "I work at a restaurant," check if that makes sense for a student. It usually does. Don't shoot students for having jobs.
Clear imposter
- Passport says "Doctor"
- Answer is "I'm a construction worker"
- Verdict is Imposter
Origin Mismatch
Ask where they're from. Vague answers are usually fine.
Acceptable vague answers
- "I come from a small town"
- "Near the capital"
- "A village you've never heard of"
Imposter answers
- Names a completely different country than passport
- "I come from Mars"
- "I don't remember where I'm from"
Duration Mismatch
Ask how long they're staying. Compare to passport.
Acceptable
- "I'm not sure yet" (forgetful, not imposter)
- Slight variations in wording
Imposter
- Passport says 2 weeks, they say 6 months
- Completely contradictory information
Reason Mismatch
Ask why they're traveling. Compare to passport purpose.
Clear imposter
- Passport says "Business"
- Answer is "I'm here for vacation"
- Verdict is Imposter
Physical Mutations
Some imposters have visible physical anomalies. Spot these before they even scan their passport.
| Mutation | Description |
|---|---|
| Extra limbs | More than 2 arms or legs |
| Wrong proportions | Head too big/small, limbs too long |
| Inhuman features | Tentacles, claws, unusual skin |
| Floating | Not touching the ground |
| Glitching | Body parts phasing or flickering |
| Wrong face | Features in wrong positions |
Look at every traveler as they approach. Physical mutations are instant tells and no questions are needed. Just grab your shotgun.
X-Ray Scanner
Available on Shift 2. Shows the traveler's skeleton.
Human skeleton has standard anatomy with skull, spine, ribcage, arms, legs. Memorize what normal looks like.
Imposter skeletons have
- Extra bones
- Missing bones
- Wrong bone shapes
- Non-human anatomy
- Multiple skulls
- Tentacle structures
The X-Ray scanner needs to recharge between travelers. Use it to confirm suspicions, not as your primary detection method.
The ??? Traveler
Once per shift, someone shows up with no passport info. Just question marks everywhere.
Detection options
- Use your free hint (one per shift) which tells you human or imposter
- Use a Scanner charge for instant verification
- Guess (50/50 if you have no other options)
Save your free hint for ??? travelers. Don't waste it on someone you can verify normally. If you have a Scanner, use a charge instead of the hint when possible.
Chapter 2 Passenger Detection
Chapter 2 adds cars with multiple passengers. Only the driver has ID.
Driver Detection
Same as Chapter 1
- Name, birthday, job, origin
- ID photo comparison
- Physical mutations
Birthday tell is when imposters sometimes say a year hundreds of years ago. If someone says they were born in 1823, they should be dead. Imposter.
Passenger Detection (No ID)
Passengers don't have IDs. Use these methods.
Purpose Check
- Look at the computer screen next to your window
- It shows data from the car's last checkpoint
- Ask passengers their purpose
- If it doesn't match the checkpoint data, imposter
Duration Check works the same way. Compare their answer to checkpoint data.
Demonic Voice
Some imposters speak with demonic/distorted voices. The sound continues throughout the conversation, so it might not be the person you're currently talking to.
How to identify
- Walk around the car
- Listen for where the sound is coming from
- Use headphones for better directional audio
- The person making the demonic sound is the imposter
Strange Walking
Some imposters walk abnormally when exiting the car.
How to catch
- Stay outside your office during shifts
- Watch passengers exit the car
- Look for unnatural movement patterns
- Shoot anyone who walks weird
Strange Speech
Text appears backwards, unreadable, or in strange symbols. Instant imposter tell and no further verification needed.
Disfigured Face
Without ID photos to compare, you need to learn what normal faces look like. After a few shifts, abnormal faces become obvious.
Detection Priority
When a traveler approaches, check in this order.
- Physical mutations are instant tells, no questions needed
- Passport photo for quick visual comparison
- Name is the first question, easy verification
- Job is the second question (watch for student trap)
- Origin/Duration/Reason for remaining verification
- X-Ray to confirm suspicions if unsure
For Chapter 2 passengers
- Physical mutations
- Strange speech is an instant tell
- Demonic voice requires walking around to locate
- Purpose/Duration to compare to checkpoint data
- Strange walking requires watching them exit
Common Mistakes
Shooting students. Their passport says "Student" but they mention a part-time job. That's normal. Check the passport.
Trusting vague answers. "A small town" is fine. "A small town on Neptune" is not.
Ignoring physical tells. Some players get so focused on questions they miss obvious mutations.
Not using the X-Ray. It's free confirmation when you're unsure.
Wasting the free hint. Save it for ??? travelers.
Missing demonic voices. The sound isn't always from who you're talking to. Walk around to locate it.
Staying inside during Chapter 2. You'll miss strange walking tells. Stay outside.
Imposter Shooting Tips
Once you've identified an imposter
- Grab your shotgun
- Jump out the window of your booth
- Shoot them in the back as they walk away
- The green goo lands outside, easier to mop
Shooting from inside your booth works, but the goo gets everywhere. Cleaning is faster when you shoot them outside.
